Transplant Unit

The liver is the largest organ in the body. It is situated on the right hand side of the body behind the lower ribs. It performs many complex functions which are essential to life and health. The main functions are:

• To make proteins that enable the blood to clot and allow the body to fight infection.
• To convert food into substances that permit repair and growth.
• To produce bile, which is stored in the gall bladder and assists the absorption of fats and certain vitamins.
• To process and remove drugs and other toxic substances.
