Sexual activity after renal transplant

Renal transplant information >>>

You may resume sexual activity as soon as you feel well enough. It will not harm the transplant. How quickly you feel ready will depend a lot on your recovery progress. Sexual functioning can be affected by transplantation and some medications can also affect it. If you have any concerns, please feel free to discuss them when you come to clinic or with the transplant co-ordinator or ward staff.

If you are sexually active and do not have a steady sexual partner, you should use condoms to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, syphilis, herpes, hepatitis or gonorrhoea. You should also use contraception to avoid unplanned pregnancy.

Contraception

Although many women who have undergone kidney transplantation go on to have successful pregnancies, women should avoid pregnancy for at least one year following transplant surgery. You should discuss birth control with your doctor.

Before planning a pregnancy there are many things to think about. It is advisable to discuss your plans with your kidney doctor.
